Week 7 Term 4, 2024
Thankyou
In my first Newsletter message I would like to thank all of the staff and students of St James for making me feel very welcomed to your lovely school.
As I have said in previous correspondence to you all, I have been in a similar situation at St James, so it has been lovely to come back and see all of the changes/improvements to the facilities here and to reconnect with the students who were here during my last stint in 2020.
A brief introduction to who I am:
I live in Gladstone and have done so since 2013, when I moved there to take up the role of principal of St Joseph's Parish School. My wife, Leah, works as a dental nurse in Port Pirie. I have three sons, one working as a teacher at St Marks and two others studying at University in Adelaide. I grew up in Port Pirie. I love living and working in a small country town and have a passion for the education of the children in these areas.
I have already met a few St James parents and look forward to meeting more of you during my time here. I already know some of you are going to have to introduce yourselves more than once to me, so I do apologise ahead of time for that.
Martin Hayes
Acting Principal
Giving Tree
In Weeks 7, 8 and 9, our Mini Vinnies group will be setting up a Giving Tree for the Vinnies Christmas Appeal. Donations of non-perishable food items, or unwrapped toys and clothes, can be placed under the tree during the final weeks of school. Your contributions will help make Christmas a little brighter for those in need, while teaching your child the spirit of giving.
Blessing of the Cribs
On Sunday, December 8th, we invite families to join the parish for Mass at 9:00am. Students and their families will have the opportunity to read and actively participate in the Mass. Additionally, families are encouraged to bring their cribs or nativity scenes (or parts of them) from home to be blessed by Fr. Ranjith. If you plan to attend and would like your children to participate, please inform Annie O’Reilley.
Mock Wedding
On Monday December 9th the staff would like to hold a Mock Wedding for Mr Taylor and Miss Parisotto. They will be married in early January. We ask children to wear their ‘good casual clothes’, maybe a dress or a polo or collared shirt (but perhaps not your very best clothes). Tuck will still occur but will be presented in wedding style and of course there will be wedding cake and dancing! We are looking forward to an afternoon of fun celebrating the future Mr and Mrs Taylor.

Uniform Review
A lot of time and effort this year has gone into reviewing the St James uniform and we would like to thank the committee for all of the work that they have done so far.
This process will continue into 2025, when the committee will review the results and start to source any samples for items that may possibly be changed. Please note that there will be no final decisions made before the new principal is appointed, and even after that there will be a transition period before the new uniform becomes compulsory. So, you can be assured that you are still be able to confidently purchase any of the existing uniform items knowing that they will be able to be worn for quite some time.
Swimming Lessons Week 7
All students from Reception to Year 6 will participate in Swimming Lessons this week at the Jamestown Swimming Pool. Families will have received the timetable last week via email. Thank you to Debby Hale for again taking on the role as the main Swimming Instructor this year.
Splash Day
On Wednesday 11th December, all students will be going to the Jamestown Pool from 11am – 1pm for a splash and fun to celebrate the end of the school year! Please see your hard copy note sent home to families for more information.
Visits to the Jamestown Magic Cave
In Week 8 of this term, the students will have the opportunity to visit the Jamestown Magic Cave. Thank you to Jemma Tabone and all the extra little elves for all the work that is put into the magic cave each year. The students love visiting and look forward to seeing the magic come alive again this year.
Thanksgiving Mass and Graduation
Our Thanksgiving Mass and Year 6 Graduation will be in Week 9, on Tuesday 10th December at 6pm in the Church. For those who are new to our school community, it is one of the most important events in the school year. All students and families are expected to attend in their traditional summer uniform. As this is a family event, each child must be accompanied by an adult. Students will meet their class teacher in their classroom at 5:45pm. Teachers will bring classes to the Church, and they will sit in their class groups. Each family will be asked to bring a salad (nut free) to share. Meat will be cooked and supplied by the school board.
• 5:45 – Students to meet class teachers in classrooms
• 6:00 – Mass in Church
• 7:00 – Shared Picnic style meal
• 7:30 – Year 6 Graduation in Church Hall, End of year awards and Thank You's.
• 8:00 – Event concludes
If your family is unable to attend, please contact the office staff via email (info@stjames.catholic.edu.au), send a note into the office or phone the school.
Catholic Athletics Carnival
Congratulations to all our athletes who competed in the Catholic Schools Athletics Canrival in Adelaide in Week 4.
“Catholic Athletics was a fun way to put our athletic skills to the test. When we left everyone was nervous, but as soon as we got on the bus it all melted away with happy comments to each other about their skills. The bus ride there was so much fun, radio turned up loud and chatting to friends. It was also quick because the teachers and the bus driver had already met and discussed the route. When we got there we were all too excited to stay in lines. We sat down and had a little snack. Rosie, Elkie and Sid raced each other to warm up. Some people did a 400m run to warm up others only did 100m. The day went on, everyone had smiles on their faces. Different events in different places made students go everywhere, but a teacher always knew before we wandered off. At the end of the day came the presentations.
- Indy F won Year 5 Champion Girl
- Denzel F won Y3 champion boy
- the Y4 girls and Y3 boys were the best in their grades.
- Our school came 3rd overall, but none of us cared because we were all winners in our books.
On the bus ride back, Mr Taylor taught Rosie and Sophie to play a game called 'Top Trumps". The bus grew silent because of the fun, tiring day.
To sum up our day we all had a blast, we all had an amazing day and can't wait for next year!” - Rosie R
A big thank you to Harry Simpson, Luke Clark and Kerry Sutter who volunteered to time keep for the entire day and to all the parents who attended to support and cheer on our team.
SAPSASA Tennis Carnival
Last week on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, Hugh, Ethan and Harriet travelled to Adelaide to compete in SAPSASA Tennis. Overall, they played 5 singles and 5 doubles and tied first with Port and Gawler. It was very hot and humid, many people came off the court red as a tomato. It was a wonderful few days and a great way to end the year. - Harriet S
2025 Op Shop
Thanks to families for showing their interest for a 2025 Pop Up Op Shop. There was overwhelming support for this event to go ahead again next year. Thank you so much for your support of the school. We will set a date early next year.
Op Shop Early Drop Off
On Wednesday in Week 9, we will have the hall open for anyone who already has a collection of donations for the Op Shop they are wanting to clear out. Please place items neatly in the kitchen.
Christmas Gathering
We invite all parents to join us for our End-of-Year Christmas Dinner on Tuesday, December 3rd, at 6:30 PM at the Railway Hotel. Whether or not you’ve attended meetings this year, we would love for you to come and celebrate the year with us! Please RSVP to the school office or Billie at 0409 691 207.
Recognition and Praise at Remembrance Day Service 2024
We would like to thank the students that respectfully participated and represented our school at the Remembrance Day service on November 11th this year. We wanted to take this opportunity to share with you a special note we received from the president of the Jamestown RSL Sub Branch.
On behalf of the members of the Jamestown RSL Subbranch, I would like to thank you and your school for attending the commemoration service for Remembrance Day.
I would also like to praise Sadie and Harriet on their excellent talk they gave. I received so many positive comments about their talk from several members of the community and also veterans. They all found the talk of particular interest as none of them had thought of what the children had felt during conflict.
If possible the members of the RSL would like to get a copy of the girl's talk so it can be framed and placed on the wall of the RSL for permanent display, provided this is ok with their parents and the school.
Once again thank you and we look forward to Anzac Day next year.
Terry Pickard-Clark
President
Jamestown RSL Sub Branch
Our deepest sympathy is extended to Liz, James, Bernadette and family on the passing of Mr Bob (Dilly) Lang. Mr Lang was a Pop to Pippa, Elkie, Gus, Macy, Eddie and Tilly. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Lang and Clark families.
Hot Shots Tennis Carnival
Last Wednesday, Year 3-6 St James students attended the Hot Shots Tennis Carnival at the Jamestown Tennis Courts.
“Hot Shots is a fun way that kids can practise and play tennis, even for those who don't like tennis it was good to have a little play. It was fun to play against other schools and meet new people. When the schools were playing, they played great music like the Macarena, Nutbush, YMCA and heaps of other good hits. They also gave us lunch that we ordered. They gave us burgers and fruit boxes (which were really yummy). At the start of the day they gave us an idea of how to play, then before we did the last couple of rounds, they gave us tips. There was only three of them, so they asked for a volunteer so Mr Wrobel did it. Overall, St James had a great time at Hot Shots Tennis.” - Sophie Broad
Last week, the Year 2/3 class went on their camp – an excursion to the Clare Valley, followed by a sleepover at school. All students represented the school well and had a fantastic day out!
Our first stop was Mintaro Maze. We sat under the trees to eat some recess, and played some of the giant games they had, like chess and Jenga. Even though it was hot, we enjoyed exploring around the maze using clues to find and solve answers to some questions.
Our next stop was at Sevenhill, where we had a look around St Aloysius Church. We compared the church to our church at school and came up with some similarities and differences. We got to have a look in the crypt, where priests are buried underground, and walked around the vineyards to a cottage where Mary MacKillop once stayed. After our walk we sat under the trees to eat our lunch and had a play on the grass area.
Finally, we jumped on the bus to head for the water park in Clare! What a perfect day for water play. We spent time splashing around, standing under the tipping bucket and going down the slides to cool off during the afternoon. This was a highlight for many, with most students sharing that this was their favourite part of the day.
Soon we were back on the bus ready to head to Blyth to watch the movie Runt at the cinema. As a class, we enjoyed reading this book earlier in the year and following Annie and her dog Runt’s adventure from their small town of Upson Downs in WA all the way to Krumpets dog show in London, trying to help their family who were at risk of losing their farm due to the drought. The movie was just as good as the book and had all of us giggling in our seats, while pulling at the heartstrings at the same time!
We then travelled back to school where we ate delicious pizza for tea, followed by ice creams and fruit before getting ready for bed. In the morning we enjoyed a pancake breakfast and a cricket game before being picked up. We had a fantastic time, huge thank you to Emily Cousins and Peta Caulfield for coming with us for the day, Peta Caulfield and Tamara Wilson for your help overnight, and Greg Farr for help with swag rolling and pack up in the morning - very grateful for all of your help!!
Carols in the Park – Sunday 15th December the Jamestown Lions’ Club “Carols in the Park” will be held at 8pm, in the Jamestown Memorial Park.
